IAH Groundwater & Ecosystem Network, Call to Action Letter

Dear IAH National Chapter Chairman,

The Groundwater & Ecosystems Network of IAH is interested in reaching out to the National Chapters to engage more fully in groundwater dependent ecosystem (GDE) research and management at the local level. To this end, we will be initiating a partnership with the Ramsar Secretariat and offering assistance in groundwater policy and general hydrologic understanding of Ramsar sites.

Ramsar expertise is focused on biology/ecology, and less so on the dynamics of site hydrology particularly subsurface water or hydrogeochemistry. Our Network can help provide science support to the RAMSAR Secretariat in groundwater issues. We ask for your assistance and advice in these efforts.

The attached letter (CLICK HERE) outlines our position and requests that National Chapters encourage members to:

1) Interact with Ramsar site management to offer help in review or provide hydrogeological input on issues related to groundwater, and

2) Share their past or present hydrogeological characterizations of Ramsar sites with the Groundwater & Ecosystems Network.

Please distribute this letter to your members particularly those working on the issue of GDEs and those members that have any interactions with Ramsar sites. Also, if you have input or ideas on ways to make these efforts a success, please let me know.

Thank you for your interest.

Sincerely,

Joe Gurrieri
