A two-day conference to celebrate the International Association of Hydrogeologists 60th anniversary and the Geological Society Year of Water, hosted by the University of Birmingham. The conference will incorporate the Ineson Lecture and re-launch of Groundwater our Hidden Asset supported by the Groundwater Forum.

The conference has four broad topic areas:

Groundwater and energy

  • Groundwater and the hydrocarbon industry
  • Groundwater in renewable and nuclear energy
  • Groundwater as an energy source
  • Valuing groundwater
  • Food security and agriculture

Groundwater resources

  • Groundwater extremes from drought to flooding
  • New approaches to deployable output
  • Is ASR the panacea?
  • Groundwater and the Water Framework Directive

Groundwater and ecosystem services

  • Groundwater Dependent Terrestrial Ecosystem (wetlands)
  • Groundwater and aquatic ecosystems
  • Groundwater Ecosystems (stygofauna)
  • Defining aquifers natural capital

Groundwater quality

  • Legacy (e.g. NAPL) and emerging contaminants
  • Agricultural impacts (nitrate, pesticides, pathogens)
  • Contaminant migration, natural attenuation and remediation
  • Compliance with the Water Framework Directive
  • Valuing groundwater lost to contamination

Provisional Programme

  • Day 1 – Topics: Groundwater and energy and groundwater resources including re-launch of Groundwater our Hidden Asset.
  • Day 2 – Topics: Groundwater ecosystem services and quality incorporating the Ineson Lecture.

  • Talks 10:30am – 5:00pm
  • Drinks reception and dinner on 13 September
